The Finches of Serenity

Welcome to Part Eight of our blog series about the finches that call our Serenity Aviaries home!

Today, we’re diving into information about the colorful and wildly popular Zebra Finch!

zebra finch physical appearance

Other Common Names

  • Chestnut-eared Finch
  • Spotted-sided Finch

Natural Habitat

The zebra finch is native to arid regions throughout Australia.

They’re found mainly in the center of the continent, usually in large flocks. You can also find them in dry regions in Indonesia and East Timor.

In their habitats, zebra finches prefer to feed on a variety of plant seeds and grasses.

In the seasons where seeds aren’t readily available, they will eat insects, berries, fruits, and other forms of vegetation.

Physical Characteristics

zebra finch sitting in a serenity aviary

Zebra finches grow to about 4 inches from beak to tail, which is a common length among finches.

The common male’s colors consist of a white belly, grey on its back, a black and white barred tail, bright red beak, dark brown eyes with black teardrops, red/orange patches on its cheeks, and zebra-like stripes on its neck and chest.

A female zebra finch has a slightly duller color scheme.

Its main colors are a pale orange beak, dark brown eyes with a black teardrop, grey/creme back and chest, and a white belly.

Only the males have the ‘zebra stripes’ on their chest and the bright red/orange cheek patches.

The Zebra Finch Bird Song

The male zebra finch has a lot of personality and does most of the singing, while females’ ‘songs’ are more like quick chirps.

Ever heard a zebra finch sing before? Play the video below and listen to the delightful melody.

Play the video to hear this bird’s wonderful song, a song that enchants those in the facilities we service.

Behavior and Temperament

Zebra finches have bubbly personalities, but they aren’t very receptive to being handled by humans.

They may get scared of us if we approach them too aggressively, so we’re very careful when making bird cage cleaning visits.

Although they may not love humans, they’re very social with other zebra finches.

In their natural habitat, these finches travel in large flocks of around 20 in search of food and water.

Breeding Habits of Zebra Finches

Zebra finches don’t follow a specific breeding schedule.

If certain conditions are met, they can breed any time of year after a period of heavy rainfall.

They’re also monogamous, so they’ll find one mate and breed for life.

The Breeding Process

A hen will lay anywhere between four and six eggs per clutch, then she and the male will help incubate the eggs for roughly two weeks.

About five weeks after hatching, fledgling zebra finches become mostly independent.

After around one to two months, we displace the growing fledglings to a new cage so the parent finches can breed once more.

If the parents decide to mate again, they tend to be territorial and aggressive toward their growing fledglings.

So, for the sake of the birds, we safely remove them and place them in a different aviary.

Tips for Designing a Zebra Finch Enclosure

spacious dark oak stain serenity aviary

1) Size

We make sure our enclosures are large enough for zebra finches to roam comfortably.

Zebra finches like racing one another from branch to branch around their aviary. They’ll also want to establish their own territory, and a crowded cage won’t allow that.

If they feel crowded, zebra finches may experience stress, aggression, and could even get sick.

2) Shape

Because they enjoy flying back and forth, the length of their enclosure is more important than the height.

Also, avoid using rounded edges for the structure, as this removes some of their available space.

3) Materials

Chewing and ingesting materials can be an issue for finches in an aviary.

The structure should be free of softwood, paint, untreated steel, and soft plastics.

By using high-grade materials, like solid oak, stainless steel wire, and high-grade laminate panels, Serenity Aviaries don’t allow for chewing or ingestion.

4) Features and Accessories

You need food and water access, ventilation, adequate internal temperature, and lighting for a comfortable zebra finch.

Other accessories like nests, swings, and branches are also needed for their rest and stimulation.

NOTE: Finches feel safer when they’re higher up, especially in an aviary. We position their nests, branches, and swings as high up as possible.

Glass vs Acrylic Fish Tanks https://www.serenityusa.com/blog/glass-vs-acrylic-fish-tanks/ Tue, 22 Aug 2023 08:00:00 +0000 https://www.serenityusa.com/?p=7722 Is glass or acrylic the best material for a fish tank?

We use glass for all of our Serenity Aquariums because we feel they offer the most value.

What do you think?

If you're unsure, check out our brief guide and understand the differences between them.

The post Glass vs Acrylic Fish Tanks appeared first on Serenity Aquarium & Aviary Services.

]]>
When it comes to setting up a captivating aquarium, the choice between a glass or acrylic fish tank plays a crucial role.

Both materials have their own advantages and disadvantages, making them suitable for various setups.

In this brief post, we will explore some key differences between glass and acrylic fish tanks.

glass vs acrylic fish tanks glass aquarium

Glass vs Acrylic Fish Tanks:

  • Material Composition
  • Weight
  • Clarity
  • Strength and Durability
  • Customization

1) Material Composition

Glass Fish Tanks:

  • Glass tanks are made from silica, which is a natural material.
  • The manufacturing process involves melting silica sand at high temperatures and then cooling it to form solid sheets.
  • Glass tanks have been a traditional choice in the aquarium hobby due to their clarity and scratch-resistance properties.

Acrylic Fish Tanks:

  • Acrylic tanks are constructed from a type of plastic known as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).
  • Acrylic is manufactured by chemically bonding acrylic monomers, resulting in a lightweight and durable material.
  • Acrylic tanks gained popularity for their lightweight design and optical clarity.

2) Weight

Glass Fish Tanks:

  • Glass tanks are heavier compared to acrylic tanks, making them more challenging to move or transport.
  • The weight can become a concern, especially for larger setups that require additional support and sturdy stands.

Acrylic Fish Tanks:

  • Acrylic tanks are significantly lighter than glass tanks of the same size, making them easier to handle and install.
  • Their lightweight nature allows for more flexible placement options and reduces the risk of structural damage to floors or furniture.

3) Clarity

Glass Fish Tanks:

  • Glass tanks provide superior optical clarity, giving viewers a distortion-free and true-to-life glimpse of the aquatic world inside.
  • They are less prone to scratching, ensuring that the view remains unblemished for years.

Acrylic Fish Tanks:

  • Acrylic tanks are known for their exceptional transparency, offering a clear view of the underwater landscape.
  • However, they are more susceptible to scratching, and over time, may develop fine lines that can impact the overall clarity.

4) Strength and Durability:

Glass Fish Tanks:

  • Glass tanks are more robust and less prone to scratches compared to acrylic tanks.
  • They are less likely to warp or yellow over time, providing a stable and long-lasting environment.

Acrylic Fish Tanks:

  • Acrylic tanks are more impact-resistant than glass tanks, reducing the risk of cracks or shattering.
  • However, acrylic is more susceptible to yellowing from UV light, which can affect the aesthetics of the tank.

5) Customization:

Glass Fish Tanks:

  • Glass tanks offer limited customization options, with standard rectangular or cuboid shapes being the most common.
  • Custom-built glass tanks are available, but they can be expensive and have longer lead times.

Acrylic Fish Tanks:

  • Acrylic tanks are highly customizable, as they are easier to mold into various shapes and sizes.
  • They are an excellent choice for creatively designed aquariums.

Conclusion: Glass vs Acrylic for Fish Tanks

Both glass and acrylic fish tanks have their unique advantages and drawbacks.

If you prioritize optical clarity, scratch resistance, and a traditional aesthetic, glass tanks may be the right choice for you.

On the other hand, if you seek lightweight, impact-resistant, and customizable options, acrylic tanks are worth considering.

Ultimately, the decision between glass and acrylic fish tanks will depend on your personal preferences, budget, and the specific needs of your fish.

We use glass in all of our Serenity Aquariums, but which material do you think is best?

The Finches of Serenity

Welcome to Part Seven of our blog series about the finches that call our Serenity aviaries home.

Here, you’ll learn about the very colorful and very friendly Gouldian Finch!

Other Common Names

  • Rainbow Finch
  • Lady Gouldian Finch
  • Gould’s Finch

Natural Habitat

four colorful gouldian finches standing in a stream

You’ll find Lady Gouldian finches in the northern regions of Australia.

More specifically, they live in tropical climates in savannas, woodlands, grasslands, and shrublands.

Unfortunately, their natural habitats are dwindling due to frequent wildfires in those regions.

Physical Characteristics

lady gouldian finch looking at its reflection on the ground

The male Gouldian finch may be one of the most recognizable finches on Earth.

They grow to about 5 inches from beak to tail. They’re best known for their yellow-orange belly, purple chest, aqua blue and black around their neck and pointed tail, and green on their back and wings.

There are three main color morphs of Lady Gouldian finches. Their plumage colors stay generally consistent, but the color on their heads can be black, orange, or red.

Female Gouldian finches have similar color patterns, but the colors are slightly duller.

Fledglings, on the other hand, are completely dull green.

Bird Song

Male Gouldian finches are beautiful singers, enchanting anyone that comes in contact with them.

Female Gouldian finches, however, can only make simple calling or chirping noises.

Play the video to hear this bird’s wonderful song, a song that enchants those in the facilities we service.

Behavior and Temperament

Gouldian finches are generally social, docile, and gentle.

multiple colorful finches perched on a rope in an aviary

They love the company of other finches, but since they’re so calm and friendly, they need to be kept with other mild-mannered birds.

They are also not very receptive to being handled by humans.

When we deep clean our client’s bird cages, we give Gouldian finches their space and are very careful when conducting health checks.

Breeding Habits of Gouldian Finches

male and female gouldian finches perched together on a branch

Gouldian finches lay around four to eight eggs per clutch.

Both parents will incubate them during the day, but the hen takes on full duties at night.

Three to four weeks after hatching, Gouldian fledglings will leave the nest.

And once Gouldians are around 40 days old, they are almost fully independent.

We offer breeding pairs for Lady Gouldians, if available. Their breeding process is more delicate than most finches, so we ensure they’re all safe and healthy.

And as a part of our continued services, we’ll move the fledglings to a new home once they’re too old for the current cage.

Tips for Designing a Gouldian Finch Enclosure

1) Size

For each pair of Lady Gouldians, you should have at least 3-4 square feet of space on the bottom.

These are very active finches so they need a large enclosure to be happy and healthy.

Otherwise, Gouldian finches may become obese, stressed, agitated, depressed, and aggressive.

You need food and water access, ventilation, adequate internal temperature, and lighting for a comfortable Gouldian.

Additional accessories like nests, swings, and branches are also needed for their rest and entertainment.

NOTE: Finches feel safer when they’re higher up, especially in an aviary. We position their nests, branches, and swings as high up in the aviary as possible.

7 Easy Ways to Control Algae in a Fish Tank https://www.serenityusa.com/blog/algae-in-a-fish-tank/ Tue, 13 Jun 2023 06:00:00 +0000 https://www.serenityusa.com/?p=6735 Say goodbye to a constantly dirty fish tank with our guide on algae control!

Learn about the causes of algae growth, proven techniques to keep your aquarium crystal clear, and why a little bit of algae is actually a good thing!

The post 7 Easy Ways to Control Algae in a Fish Tank appeared first on Serenity Aquarium & Aviary Services.

]]>
It doesn’t matter if your fish tank is fresh or salty, big or small, new or old: Algae will grow inside.

Algae control is an ongoing responsibility that requires time, attention, and expertise.

Take it from us; we’ve been cleaning aquariums in businesses for almost 15 years.

Whether you’re a client of Serenity, a potential client, or just an interested aquarist, you should know some ways to control algae in a fish tank.

And that’s exactly what you’ll get out of this post!

What Causes Algae in a Fish Tank?

algae on plants in a fish tank

Algae are like the typical plant; they flourish in environments with lots of water, nutrients, and light.

These are in abundance in a fish tank, so algae grow naturally, and sometimes very quickly.

Why Do I Need to Remove Algae?

In a fish tank, a natural process occurs to maintain livable water conditions.

This process eliminates harmful bacteria, but it also causes algae growth.

So, surprisingly, a small amount of algae signifies a healthy tank, but it will need to be removed eventually.

This algae-producing process is called the Nitrogen Cycle.

The Nitrogen Cycle

This Nitrogen Cycle works by oxidizing harmful bacteria in the water and making them less toxic.

Here’s a brief overview of this natural process:

  1. Fish waste and decaying material create ammonia (very toxic to fish)
  2. Nitrosomonas oxidize ammonia and produce nitrites (less toxic, but still lethal)
  3. Nitrobacter oxidize nitrites and produce nitrates, also known as algae (much less toxic)
  4. Algae will continue to grow in the tank until we change the water and reset the cycle

So, while algae growth is the only visible stage of this cycle, it’s actually the least toxic.

Some algae growth is a sign that your tank is cycling through, so small amounts are nothing to worry about.

However, long-term exposure will start to hurt your fish, so regular cleaning is important.

Plus, say your aquarium is displayed in an office lobby or nursing home, an algae-filled tank will become more of a liability than an asset.

How To Stop Algae in a Fish Tank

Sorry to disappoint, but you really can’t.

If you have fish in an aquarium, there will be nutrients, there will be light, and there will be algae.

If you’re asking yourself, “Why is my fish tank getting dirty so fast?”, we have some answers!

Here are 7 tips from our service pros who deal with algae every day.

7 Ways to Control Algae in a Fish Tank

1) Get The Right Size Fish

Fish are the main culprits in algae production.

Their waste, among other things, produces harmful ammonia in the water and begins the Nitrogen Cycle (mentioned above).

This is, of course, unavoidable, so what can we do about it?

The larger the fish you have, the more waste getting produced, which produces a lot of bacteria. This bacteria then turns to algae.

You should also consider the relationship between fish waste and the amount of water in a tank.

If you have big fish crammed in a small tank, there will be significant algae growth.

If you have smaller fish in a spacious aquarium, there will be much less waste and algae production.

2) Remember to Turn Off the Fish Tank Lights

top view of fish tank lights

Many aquarists light up their tank through the night.

This is also common in healthcare and hospitality facilities that provide services around the clock.

The problem is, constant light is a major cause of algae growth.

To control algae, fish tank lights should be on for no more than 8-10 hours per day.

This day/night schedule is also important for the fish.

They may not sleep like we land mammals, but fish do rest, and turning the lights off helps with that.

It’s best to find a light with a timer that automatically turns on and off when you specify (equipped on each Serenity Aquarium).

3) Consider Where You Place the Fish Tank

serenity aquarium in the corner of a waiting room

Since we’re on the subject of light, remember that direct sunlight can also create lots of algae.

We all love the sight of a glistening fish tank and it makes for an excellent decoration in a lobby or foyer—Just prepare for more algae growth.

You don’t have to put your fish tank in a dark closet, either.

Display it how you’d like, stay on top of algae removal, and you can sustain a healthy fish tank.

4) Don’t Over Feed The Fish

Overfeeding is also a primary cause of algae growth.

Uneaten food in a tank starts to decay, and this contributes to the ammonia and other bacteria in the Nitrogen Cycle.

To avoid this, watch your fish the next time you drop food in the tank.

Are they eating up all the food? Or is there a lot going uneaten?

If it’s the latter, you may want to adjust the amount of food per meal.

There are many auto fish feeders (also equipped on Serenity Aquariums) to make this easier.

These useful tools drop in the correct amount of food at the times we specify, taking the guessing game out of feeding our fish.

5) Regularly Clean Algae off the Glass

serenity service rep cleaning dirty existing aquarium

Algae will collect on the glass of your fish tank, making the water look cloudy.

For the best view, you should scrape algae off the glass a few times per week, or whenever you see fit.

Just remember, the longer that algae collect on the glass, the harder it will be to remove it later.

This task only takes a few minutes and you can use a tool like a magnetic scraper so you never have to get your hands wet.

6) Include Algae-Eating Fish

Adding algae-eating fish is a natural way to remove algae from a fish tank.

These fish actively graze on the glass walls and decor in the tank, consuming algae along the way.

However, it’s important to research the specific needs and compatibility of algae-eating fish with your existing fish and plants.

This ensures that the tank provides enough algae to sustain them.

7) Regular Water Changes

Serenity service technician cleaning aquarium sump system

The only true way to keep algae in check is to conduct water changes.

Most personal and commercial aquariums are dirty and unhealthy because there isn’t a dedicated cleaning schedule.

Water changes consist of replacing some of the water, cleaning algae off the glass and decor, cleaning the substrate, and maintaining the filtration system.

If you’re a business owner, administrator, etc., your team probably doesn’t have time for this.

Our aquarium services ensure that your tank receives the consistent water changes it needs.

Take the next step and let us handle the algae in your facility’s fish tank!

Final Thoughts

Algae growth is inevitable, but with a proactive approach and a few easy steps, we can minimize its impact.

By considering factors like the size and type of fish, feeding habits, lighting, tank placement, and regular cleaning, you can take control over algae in your aquarium.

Remember, our goal isn’t to completely eradicate algae; Our goal is to keep aquariums healthier for longer.

Small amounts of algae mean that the tank is cycling properly and there are a lot of good nutrients in the water.

That being said, we should still keep algae production to a minimum.

By using these 7 tips and strategies, we make a noticeable difference in the view of our tanks and the health of our aquatic friends.

The 7 Best Office Pets: Let an Office Pet Elevate Your Atmosphere! https://www.serenityusa.com/blog/office-pets/ Tue, 23 May 2023 06:00:00 +0000 https://www.serenityusa.com/?p=6491 Experience the wonders of having pets in the office!

Office pets are amazing additions to a workforce, putting smiles on peoples faces and brightening moods around the office.

Want to learn our 7 picks for the best office pets? You can find them here!

The post The 7 Best Office Pets: Let an Office Pet Elevate Your Atmosphere! appeared first on Serenity Aquarium & Aviary Services.

]]>
Did you know that almost 87 million homes in the US have a pet?

These animals play an integral part in our lives, and companies large and small are starting to allow office pets in their spaces.

As an animal enclosure manufacturer, we have upwards of 30 pets at our Serenity office, and we care for and cherish each of them.

Moreover, large companies like Amazon and Google, for example, gladly allow pets around their campuses.

But why would these massive, hyper-efficient companies let a “distracting pet” in the office?

Let’s find out!

Why You Should Have an Office Pet

A study by Dr. Meredith Wells-Lepley and Dr. Rose Perrine at USC sought to discover the benefits of pets in the office.

Across the 31 companies studied, most employees reported less stress, improved health, and increased job satisfaction and morale after animals were introduced.

But what are the best office pets?

And what should you consider before bringing animals into your office?

From loveability to low maintenance, here are 7 recommendations for the best pets for the office!

1. Dogs

dog in the office

As a “man’s best friend”, dogs are obvious contenders for the best office pet, with their constant lovability and chipper attitudes.

Dogs are the most popular family pet by a wide margin, present in about 65 million US households.

Just look at our office dog, Luna (pictured above).

She never fails to put a smile on our faces as she trots around the office to say good morning, or makes random visits to our desks throughout the day.

Now, what if employees at your office could be welcomed by an excitable doggo? Or bring their own dogs to work?

Studies show that companies with dogs on site can see benefits like less employee stress, higher job satisfaction, boosted productivity, and more positive interactions with coworkers.

And we can attest to that!

2. Cats

woman holding persian office cat

If you’re looking for a relatively low-maintenance office pet, cats might be the perfect choice.

Cats are the second most popular pet in the US, living in about 47 million homes.

With their independent nature and calming presence, cats can bring a sense of tranquility to a family at home, as well as coworkers at the office.

For example, Business Insider wrote about the Dutch company, Wallaart & Kusse Public Affairs, which adopted a cat for their office (and named her Sammie).

They mention Sammie’s funny antics, how she naturally brightens moods, and how caring for her as a group has improved team spirit.

3. Fish

Vibrant fish in an aquarium as office pets

If you’re looking for a very low-maintenance pet for the office, consider an office fish tank!

While there is less interaction, pet fish in the office have shown a number of benefits, like employees feeling less stressed, more productive, and more creative.

But, you may be thinking; “Cleaning an aquarium isn’t very low maintenance“.

And you’d be right!

That’s why we offer aquarium services for businesses.

Everyone gets the benefits of a clean fish tank, without the extra work!

4. Lizards

lizard office pet in a reptile enclosure

Lizards, geckos, bearded dragons, and other reptiles may be more unconventional pets for the office, but docile lizards are a great addition to the team.

These pets are long-lived, low maintenance, fun to watch, feed, and even hold if they’re comfortable.

Plus, a lizard is an uncommon office pet, so it’s a great conversation starter for guests and employees.

Most lizards are content in relatively small spaces, so a lizard enclosure can fit in almost any office.

And if you’re okay with little interaction from your team’s pet, a friendly lizard is an excellent choice.

5. Hamsters

Hamsters are another animal that you might not hold or pet too often, but their presence can create a more relaxed work environment.

If someone needs a second away from the computer screen, they could unwind and visit their furry friend (probably running 100mph on his wheel).

And considering they’re inexpensive and easy to care for, they’re a great option for an office pet.

If you want to go above and beyond: Set up a hamster enclosure with a series of tubes that branch around the room.

Your office hamster will get plenty of entertainment running around and visiting your team members.

But whether you create “Hamster City” or not, a small, giddy office pet is a definite serotonin booster.

6. Birds

colorful finches in a commercial aviary

Birds are an overlooked option as office pets.

While a loud parrot may not be the best fit, a bird aviary with a collection of finches is more easily done.

The simple sights and sounds of birds have been shown to induce relaxation and improve our mental wellbeing.

And experts agree that when employees’ mental health improves, their productivity and quality of work do as well.

Just like office fish tanks, you won’t have to worry about routine care.

Our aviary services handle all the cleaning, feeding, and aviary maintenance.

Want to see if we provide services in your state?

Check out our service area!

7. Bunnies

The final office pet on our list is none other than the friendly bunny rabbit.

These adorable, playful, and curious animals are premium serotonin boosters.

Bunnies are not as messy as you would think, either.

They’re relatively clean pets and you can even train them to use a little box.

Seeing your office bunny hop around and visit your team will definitely improve some moods.

Rabbits are surprisingly long-lived, typically around 8 to 12 years old.

They’re also intelligent, social with humans, and generally easy to care for.

So at #7 on our list, a bunny is still one of the best pets for the office.

Some Things to Consider for Office Pets

cleaning a cloudy aquarium

The Time Commitment for Care

In a fast-paced business environment, time is priceless.

Regardless of the benefits they bring, you shouldn’t get office pets if you don’t have the time to care for them.

This will cause added stress on your team and even more stress on the animal.

For example, people underestimate the work it takes to clean and maintain a fish tank.

The water gets dirty, fish often get sick and pass away, and the whole display becomes an eyesore.

You can avoid this by finding a service company, like Serenity USA, to care for it.

Learn more about our company and professional services today!

Allergies

The Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery stated that about 10-20% of human adults are allergic to cats–And that’s only cats–Your team may be allergic to many different animals.

Health and safety are the keys to having pets in the office.

If you’re looking to bring in one or multiple animals, check with your whole team first so everyone is comfortable with it.

Damage to Property

If you’ve ever had a pet, you’ve probably seen some destructive behavior.

With cats and dogs, in particular, chewing, biting, scratching, knocking into things, and stealing food and other items are some of their unpredictable tendencies.

Still, offices small and large, healthcare facilities, and nursing homes are adopting pets and allowing workers to bring their own, so it looks like the benefits outweigh the costs.

However, if damage to property is a concern, a smaller pet who’s happy in an enclosure may be best.

Thankfully, fish, birds, hamsters, bunnies, and lizards all check this box!

Conclusion

Pets in the office can transform your workplace into a haven of joy, productivity, and reduced stress levels.

From the unwavering loyalty of dogs to the enchanting sounds of birds, each pet brings its unique charm.

Remember, when considering office pets, it’s essential to look at factors like time commitment, allergies, and the overall comfort of your pet and the staff.

When you get your whole team on board, your colleagues will thank you, and there’s a good chance that workdays will become more enjoyable!

In fact, the oldest-known medical document in history, the Edwin Smith papyrus, thought to be published in 17th Century Egypt, mentions the use of copper for treating wounds and cleaning drinking water.

Fast forward to the 21st Century, and we use copper in many practical situations around the world.

But how does copper kill bacteria? How do we use it in many daily applications? And why isn’t copper everywhere?

We’ll tell you all about it in this post.

How Does Copper Kill Bacteria?

Copper has antimicrobial properties, meaning it can kill harmful microorganisms. Copper surfaces are able to eradicate bacteria, germs, and viruses by a process called “contact killing”.

In other words, for copper to kill bacteria, these microorganisms must come into contact with the copper surface. And when it does, the copper quickly and effectively neutralizes it.

What happens when bacteria and viruses come into contact with copper?

According to Dr. Edward Bilsky, Chief Academic Officer at Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, copper kills germs in the following ways:

  • Copper ions damage cell membranes and destroy the DNA or RNA of these microorganisms
  • Copper ions generate oxidative stress on bacterial cells, creating hydrogen peroxide that kills the cell
  • Copper ions interfere with proteins that operate important functions that keep bacterial cells alive

As the copper ions break down the cell membranes, it effectively kills the bacteria. Thus, its ability to spread and mutate will be halted, which is why copper is so popular in healthcare facilities.

Does Copper Kill Bacteria in Water?

Copper, through a natural purification process known as the Oligodynamic Effect, can effectively eliminate harmful microbes, fungi, and bacteria when water is stored in a copper container overnight. This process involves the dissolution of small amounts of copper ions into the water, rapidly killing viruses such as MRSA, E. Coli, Influenza A, and even the Covid-19 virus. By leveraging the power of copper, you can create cleaner surfaces and ensure healthier drinking water.

Copper’s health benefits don’t stop there, either. According to Optimum Water Solutions, here are some health benefits of drinking water stored in copper containers:

  • Better digestive performance
  • Aids in weight loss
  • Helps wounds heal faster
  • Helps with arthritis and inflamed joints
  • Boosts skin health and melanin production

Practical Applications of Copper Surfaces

Copper Water Bottles

The use of copper-lined water bottles and pitchers is growing in the industry. They are more expensive than a pack of plastic water bottles, but copper bottles provide purification that plastic ones can’t compete with.

How Long Does it Take for Copper to Kill Bacteria?

The longer you store water in a copper bottle, the more microorganisms it can kill. Many experts say that you should keep water in a copper vessel for at least 8 hours to get the most out of its bacterial-killing properties. Plus, it’s perfectly safe to keep water in copper bottles for more extended periods of time.

Copper Hand Rails and Door Fixtures

The use of copper in areas of high traffic can greatly reduce the spread of bacteria and infection.

For example, a study conducted in Selly Oak Hospital in the UK found that copper surfaces were 90% more effective at killing bacteria compared to plastic, chrome-plated, and aluminum surfaces. Now, healthcare facilities use copper to make bedside rails, armrests, door handles, and many other pieces of equipment to limit healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs).

You can also find copper surfaces in busy subway systems, public buses, schools, airports, and many other high-traffic areas around the globe.

Copper in Freshwater Aquariums

Aquarists can use copper as a water treatment in freshwater fish tanks. In particular, the use of copper can reduce the rate of algae growth and kill fish-harming parasites.

Pipes that funnel water into the aquarium can be lined with copper to increase purification. For the same purpose, many aquarists will add copper sulfate to the water, which takes the form of a soluble crystal or powder.

Considerations for Copper in Aquariums

Keep in mind, copper can be much more toxic to saltwater aquariums, so you should avoid copper additives. For freshwater fish tanks, you also need to be careful that you don’t add too much copper, as this can also be toxic to the fish. You need to understand the alkalinity of the water first to know how much copper sulfate you need.

Copper in Bird Feeders

Serenity Aquarium and Aviary Services Infinity feeder

The use of copper in bird water dispensers may be less recognized than most applications, but it comes with just as many benefits. We build and service commercial aviaries for businesses across the United States, and the use of copper in our bird feeders has been a monumental addition.

In fact, since implementing this food and water feeder in our aviaries, we’ve seen a significant drop in the number of birds getting sick. Plus, its ease of use along with Serenity’s routine aviary services makes feeding and watering your birds almost effortless.

How We Tested It

To confirm copper’s bacterial killing properties, we took 14 samples of water on copper plates over a 14-week period. Throughout this period, we inspected each plate for bacterial growth. For all 14 copper plates, we found that zero bacterial colonies had grown in the water.

After months of designing and testing copper applications, we arrived at a copper plug at the bottom of our Infinity Feeder (pictured above). The Infinity Feeder’s innovative, log-shaped design holds way more water than typical bird water dispensers. Plus, you don’t have to sanitize and refill it every day! The water is continuously treated as it comes in contact with the copper plug before exiting the feeder.

Learn about Serenity’s routine cleaning services and you can get an Infinity Feeder for your aviary!

Why is Copper Still Not Used Everywhere?

If copper is so amazing, why don’t we use it in each business, hospital, home, park, mode of transportation, etc.?

Here are a few reasons.

High Price Point

One reason copper isn’t used everywhere is that it’s higher priced than other “bacteria-killing options”. For example, hospitals may see hand-gel dispensers as a cheaper option to limit the spread of HAIs, even though hand sanitizers do not kill all microbes.

Lack of Education

The truth is many people don’t fully understand copper’s antimicrobial benefits yet. Many healthcare professionals, for example, note silver as a highly effective antimicrobial metal. To be fair, silver can kill many yeasts, bacteria, and viruses, but the surface must be wet to be effective.

Copper Tarnishes Easily

Another issue may be how the copper looks after long-term use. The surface can become green, look dirty, and is also harder to clean than most metals. But regardless of this deteriorated look, copper will keep its germ-killing properties and still be more effective than steel, glass, plastic, and silver.

In Conclusion

While copper is not a cure-all for bacterial infections, it is an exceptional tool for purifying water and reducing the spread of bacteria in high-traffic areas.

Today, we utilize copper surfaces in a variety of ways in hospitals, schools, public transportation, aquarium plumbing, and even in our aviary feeders to improve bird health.

Unfortunately, copper isn’t used as widely as it could be, especially given its proven health benefits. But, as we do more research on copper and bacteria, we will likely see more innovative uses of this versatile metal in the fight against bacterial infections.

Research shows that offering sensory activities, or sensory stimulation therapy, can reduce the effects of Dementia.

This topic hits close to home, as I recently visited my grandma who’s been suffering from Dementia for over 5 years.

She had a very hard time communicating with us, so I was quite surprised when my mom played the song, “Beer Barrel Polka” (a song that was popular during WWII), and she was able to recite the entire chorus, word-for-word.

This is the power of sensory stimulation.

But what is sensory stimulation therapy? And what are some activities you can put in place right away?

Let’s discuss.

What is Sensory Stimulation Therapy?

sensory activities for dementia patients by holding and massaging hands

Sensory therapy is the use of activities focused on touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing to stimulate the synapses in the brain.

As our brains age, the activity of our synapses begins to slow, which causes a decreased response to our senses.

On top of this, those with Dementia may experience:

  • Memory loss
  • Communication challenges
  • Disorientation in familiar places
  • Mood and personality changes
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Poor judgment

Patients with Dementia benefit from sensory activities because they help activate synapses and reduce the behaviors mentioned above.

Benefits of Sensory Activities for Dementia Patients

Some cognitive improvements seen from sensory activities are as follows:

  • Better memory recall
  • Increased concentration
  • Feelings of confidence
  • Increased well-being
  • Inspiration to communicate socially

By stimulating as many senses as possible, these activities help Dementia patients connect with their surroundings in a more exciting and engaging way.

That being said, what are some sensory activities you can do with your patients or loved ones?

Here are 8 great options.

8 Sensory Activities for Dementia Patients

1) Spend Time Outdoors

Nature provides a sensory experience unlike any other, engaging our sight, smell, touch, and hearing.

Go for a walk, pick flowers, lay on the beach, eat ice cream on a park bench, or do any safe outdoor activity that engages the body and mind.

This experience is very important for those spending most of their time indoors, especially in long-term care facilities.

2) Bring Nature Indoors

When time outside is limited, those in nursing homes and memory care units can benefit from nature-focused decor.

Aquariums and bird aviaries, in particular, offer a stimulating yet relaxing activity.

Watching fish and birds can decrease disruptive behaviors and stress while promoting focus, engagement, and positive mental well-being.

And the residents cherish them. Many will relax by the habitat, observe their favorite animals, and engage with fellow residents.

We offer aquariums and aviaries for nursing homes, along with routine services to keep them clean.

Experience the wonders of these animals today!

3) Hand Massages

A hand massage is a great way to relax a person with Dementia.

The sensation of touching hands is familiar to them, and it can encourage physical and mental relaxation.

To engage more of the senses, you could also use essential oils as you massage their hands.

Calming fragrances can further stimulate the brain, inducing relaxation and producing serotonin.

4) Reading Aloud

Those with Dementia may lack the ability to interact socially, so you should encourage them to do so in private.

As such, a common sensory activity is reading aloud with them.

This way, they practice verbal communication, which may inspire them to speak more freely in social situations.

Book clubs, writing workshops, and poetry readings are great ways to get groups together for healthy interactions.

5) Music Therapy

Playing familiar music for memory loss patients is one of the best ways to boost memories, as was true in my personal story at the beginning of this post.

There is data to back this up, too.

A study conducted by Boston University in 2010, found that listening to music yields more memory recall than simple conversations.

It may also help in learning new skills or actions.

How They Conducted the Experiment

The research group presented lyrics from children’s songs that the elderly test group has likely not heard before.

Lines of lyrics were presented on a computer screen and these lyrics were sung once, spoken once, and then with no sound at all.

After listening to and reading the lyrics, they were asked if they recognized any of them.

For those with Dementia and Alzheimers, hearing the lyrics sung to them yielded the most recall by far.

6) Arts and Crafts

Another excellent sensory activity is practicing arts and crafts.

Many long-term care facilities provide time for pottery, painting, drawing, and knitting, to name a few.

These activities stimulate the senses, but they also promote creative thinking, which is great for mental health.

Learning new skills is like a workout for our brains. It keeps our minds “in shape” and increases our aptitude to learn more.

Plus, continuous learning can improve confidence, encourage engagement, and slow down memory loss.

7) Animal Visitation Therapy

Animal visitation is a common form of therapy for Dementia patients.

Being able to pet, hold, or communicate with a cuddly animal is a premier way to boost someone’s serotonin.

This type of sensory therapy can also elicit memories from previous experiences.

Even if it’s fleeting, those instances of memories are an important part of someone’s journey with Dementia.

8) Playing Board and Card Games

Depending on the condition of your patient or loved one, many games can be used as activities.

These may not stimulate all the senses, but games like Dominoes, Scrabble, and Yahtzee help Dementia patients focus, think critically, and engage with others.

Card games are also acceptable, as Cribbage, Hearts, and Go Fish provide similar stimulation and social engagement.

Additional Considerations for Sensory Activities

How Often Should You Perform Sensory Activities with Dementia Patients?

Just like our bodies, our brains must stay active to remain sharp.

Offering daily sensory activities keeps the mind occupied, which is necessary for all Dementia patients, regardless of their condition.

It’s been shown that this type of mindfulness training can lessen the effects of Dementia in the short term and the long term.

In fact, continuous activity and learning may prevent or delay the regression involved with Dementia.

Offer Activities Related to Their Interests

You will see the best results (like positive reactions and memory recall) with activities that your patient is interested in.

Maybe this person loves motorcycles. Consider bringing in decorations related to motorcycles or putting on TV shows focused on them.

Or, perhaps bird watching was one of their favorite hobbies.

Bring in soft and colorful stuffed animals for them to hold, or take them for a walk outside to listen to and search for birds.

Be Careful Not to Overstimulate

The condition of each person is unique and should be treated as such.

Watching an old TV show may bring back positive memories, but a new show with unfamiliar themes may be confusing and stressful.

Also, those with Dementia should be encouraged to connect socially. But if a group is too large, too loud, or talking about unfamiliar topics, someone with Dementia may experience fatigue and agitation.

Try to understand the condition of each individual you care for.

This way, you can devise a plan that gives each member the entertainment they need without overstimulation.

Final Thoughts

Since Dementia is so difficult to prevent, we must know how to provide proper care.

As we’ve laid out in this article, there are many ways to stimulate the senses and create meaningful interaction for people living with Dementia.

Our best advice is to offer as many sensory activities as they can handle on a given day.

Also, try to cater each activity to subjects they’re interested in.

Seeing their face brighten as they recall a memory, or the confidence they exude when learning a new skill is an incredible feeling.

With regular sensory therapy, these positive instances can happen much more often.
